Draeven paced back and forth, threatening to wear a path into the stone floor. Lorraine was deeply troubled. Dominicus was traditionally stoic and reserved. Thorne appeared mostly tired at this point. His own reservations and concern depleted by how long he had to think on the road down.
It was only Lazarus that seemed to be a cumulation of things.
Quinn leaned back in her chair, lifting her boots to the edge of the round table before her as she did so.
“I know you’re all-powerful, but really, Quinn, must you do that?” Lorraine said. Quinn pressed her lips together, more amused than annoyed that even with everything going on, Lorraine still had time to criticize her manners.
“I’ll wipe off the table myself,” she said.
Lorraine didn’t look pleased, but let it go.
“I thought soul eaters were rare?” Draven said. “Legendary even?”
“They are,” Quinn said, crossing her arms over her chest. “Because dark magic is too much for most to hold. The instability that comes with it tends to corrupt. Most dark Maji children are killed or kill themselves. That’s what makes them rare.”
“He doesn’t seem particularly unstable,” Dominicus said. “But he still consumed Vaughn.”
“Kairick is a product of his environment,” Quinn said. “He was raised as an orphan, and it’s likely that whoever did so didn’t realize what he was, or he would have been drowned in the ocean by the N’skari Council. He turns to the souls for companionship because he’s lonely.”
“You sound like you care about him,” Draeven remarked. Quinn shrugged.
“I understand him. He and I were bred in the same pit. While I was highborn and beaten for my differences, I can’t imagine his life was easier. Siva believes he clings to me because I saved him. I don’t know if that’s true, but he consumed Vaughn and the creature that was in him because of me.”
“My wife is a smart woman,” Thorne said. “Insightful. We’d do well to listen to her.”
“The child presents a risk,” Dominicus argued. “Arguably one too great for us to let him stay here.”
“There’s a reason I said for none of you to touch him,” Quinn said. Her sharp blue gaze riveted on the weapons master.
“He could consume any of us if he perceives us as a threat to you, and if he can’t control it, he could even consume you,” Dominicus said, unwilling to yield. She respected it in a sense. “Lazarus, you must see that this is a problem—”
“He holds Vaughn’s soul,” Quinn snapped, losing some of her already waning patience. “Regardless of the risk, we need to find a way to remove it and the blood magic creature attached to it.”
“That’s easier for you to say, but the gods don’t favor all of us,” Dominicus replied. His eyes flashing.
“Enough,” Lazarus commanded. He didn’t slam his hands on the table or even move to lift his gaze from the wooden pieces spread out over a map of the Sirian continent. “There’s no way to remove Vaughn, not until the boy comes of age and enters the ascension.
